Od cuaco vs Beckenham CC
Scorecard
After our fantastic victory over HSBC in the cup, we were to face Beckenham CC and their premier division talents in the second round.
Nick won the toss and elected to bowl first, much to the delight of the Beckenham boys.
After an inspirational pre match speech from a passionate nick, Ainger opened the bowling with Alvey. Aingers flight and guile was all too much for the oppo (prem batsmen) and he returned with figures of 4 2 for 24. World class considering he had to bowl during the power play. Jimmy A was unfortunate during his 2 over spell as the batsmen looked to attack him.
Jake replaced Chris after his 1 over spell and bowled an incredible 4 overs for just 15 runs, taking a wicket while doing so. Their batsmen were all struggling to get going and the run rate slowed dramatically. The skip meanwhile dismissed their opener who was well set on 25 thanks to the safe hands of Chris in the deep. Rohan replaced nick and picked up the pace of the wicket immediately having been given no time to mentally prepare by the skip. His 3 overs 2 for 13 swung the game in our favour as we headed in to the final overs. Nick and Chris came on to finish the innings and bowled well, Chris picking up a couple of wickets, and Rohan getting a direct hit for a serious run out, overall restricting the oppo to 119 for 9 off their 20 overs.
Jake and Ben went out to open the batting against what would prove to be a strong bowling attack. Both got good starts before being dismissed in quick succession, leaving the hero of the HSBC game and Tom at the crease. Chris was dismissed without troubling the scorers and we found ourselves 22 for 3 when the skipper walked out to bat.
Nick and Tom struggled to score freely off the world class prem bowling that was being thrown at them. Although only 20 runs we're scored off 5 overs, no wickets were lost. It was at this point that Nick decided that enough was enough. With their first team spinner operating from the pavilion end Nick produced what can only be described as the over of the year. With the field spread, Nick knew their was only one way to break the shackles. 3 straight 6,s including one monster that hit the croquet fence on the full highlighting the serious gym work he has been doing. Ods were back in the game! Nick and Tom were able to score more freely after this and put on 70 runs together before Tom ran himself out with the game in the balance.
Taylor was next in and he and Nick continued to keep the score board ticking however we were running out of balls and something had to give. Taylor went for the big shot and was bowled and soon after Nick was stumped or run out, no one knows exactly what he was doing but it was a quality innings, eventually ending up on 56. Ainger and billy were in and we needed 9 off 3. Ainger smashed a full toss leading to some serious cheers from the spectators, however the joy was short lived as he was dismissed next ball. Eashan was unable to connect with the final ball of the innings and we finished 115 for 7 off our 20, a sterling effort. Credit to one of their bowlers, Kamran Khan, who bowled 4-1-5-3. Probably the best figures you are likely to find in a 20 20.
Big thanks to Andy for umpiring and Wendy and Jane for scoring (all serious cricket lovers) and to the spectators. Roll on next year!!!

T20 HSBC at home, Friday 16th May

OD
Cuaco (the pride of Beckenham) Vs HSBC
Scorecard
On the final day of the 2013 Sunday league season, OD Cuaco were victorious sealing our promotion to division one replacing HSBC as they finished the season in the drop zone....or so we thought. You could imagine my surprise when the league fixtures were released for the season and yes, you guessed it we remained in the second tier. Numerous emails later it became clear that according to league admin 'HSBC are too strong a side to get relegated' and therefore we would remain in division 2. Leading on from this HSBC decided that we were not strong enough to play them in a pre season friendly as they looked for stronger opposition to give them better practise. Therefore you could imagine my delight when we were drawn against them in the first round of the annual 20/20 competition.
Having the skipper turn up as the match was starting due to some serious traffic on the M25 was not the ideal start to the evening, however Aaron White was able to lose the toss on his behalf and we were sent out to bat. The two 'experienced' members of the batting line up; Gary and Aaron were out cheaply leaving Clapp and Chris at the crease. Clapp soon fell and after the skip decided to run himself out for 2 it would be an understatement to say that things were not going as planned. Wickets continued to fall from one end, meanwhile Chris was showing his class, smashing runs all over the place without offering any chances. Finally Ainger was able to offer some support smashing a beautiful 6 on his way to a very important 17 towards the end of the innings. Chris however stole the show with a fantastic 59, including 4 sixes and 2 boundary's. This left OD's 122 for 9 from their 20 overs. The HSBC bowling was good, but certainly wasn't 'too strong,' for us.
A capacity crowd was building and they were treated to some seriously creative captaincy as Ainger was given the new ball, and to great success as he got through his 4 overs quickly at the expense of just 18 runs. Absolutely shattered from his innings, it only seemed sensible that Chris was to share the new ball and after taking a wicket in his second over, he was to be saved for the crucial overs at the end. Despite not being able to score too freely off spinners Jake and Patel, HSBC were cruising towards our total...then the fielding took over. A world class throw from Worsley, along with some serious glove work from Eashan dismissed their set batsman and a caught and bowled from Caddy, had the game slightly in HSBC's favour heading in to the final 4 overs, with experienced bowlers, Chris and Worsley with 2 each.
Although we were unable to pick up a wicket in over 16 and 17, runs were kept down leaving them on 112 for 3 with 12 balls to go. Worsley was to bowl the crucial penultimate over. HSBC looked to be closing in on their target before trying to run 2 to man of the moment Webster. A direct hit from the boundary, had the players and fans delighted as OD Cuaco were back in the game. This was followed by Worsley rearranging the new batsman's wickets on his first ball. Over to you Mr Webster for the final over. I can't remember exactly what happed but they tried running 2 to our fielder of the year Jake and needless to say they were run out, this was followed by some more sharp work behind the stumps from Eashan with a stumping and they were left needing 4 to draw off the final ball. Unsurprisingly man of the match Christopher bowled a dot ball and OD Cuaco had won by 4 runs!
I would like to that Bob Lake for umpiring, Wendy Webster for producing Chris and for scoring and to the many fans that came down to watch. It seriously does make a difference to the players when there is a large crowd at the home of cricket. Next up: just the small challenge of defeating the mighty Backenham CC, however it is one that both myself and players look forward to.
We are OD Cuaco and we bloody love cricket!!!!
