2s v Bromley Common 20/7
Scorecard
OD CUACO 2s v Bromley Common 2s - 20 July 2013
Stand in skipper Russ won the toss and decided to bowl.
Top of the league Bromley Common had a steady start getting to 167 with 8 overs to go. The batting side then added far too many runs, chosing not to declare and try for the win, finishing on 244 for 7. Highlight for ODs was Liam Bullock's two excellent catches.
Fox batted marvelously holding the innings together and carrying his bat. Despite their top of the league status, Bromley still declined to go for the win posting feilders in the deep even when OD's required 100 runs in 5 overs! Foul mouthed abuse didn't put off the OD batters who held on for a draw.
More needed next week when a Addington Village visit the home of cricket.

Scorecard
On one of the nicest days of the year, the mighty 2s visited Old Elthamians.
After watching the Lions blow it in the last few minutes of the rugby, thoughts turned to cricket, and on one of those rare occasions where both teams had an umpire, OEs won the toss and put us in. Fox and Rispoli started things off for ODs on an undetermined track. The opening bowlers didn't look like they would trouble the batsmen, but the experienced duo started carefully and thoughtfully.
After 8 watchful overs on a slow puffy wicket, Pingu got the slightest of edges and was on his way for 10. This brought Westmacott in to join Foxy, and the scoring rate started to increase. OEs needed to recruit one of the spectators as their 11th man after a no show, which was fine as he'd been on the Magners! The missing player did eventually turn up at the end of the 24th over, and after some discussion Captain Lake graciously allowed him to play. However, after it was pointed out he wouldn't be able to bowl for another 24 overs, he got back in his car and Magner man carried on. At drinks Craig and David had got us into the 70s for the loss of 1 wicket. A good solid start.
The steady flow of singles, with the occasional boundary, kept the score going at a steady rate until Craig got an edge behind and departed for 44.
Dave Mew joined Foxy now and the wickets in hand started to show their benefit. After playing himself in, Mewy was striking the ball nicely and after 106 balls and 118 minutes Foxy reached his 50. Mew then chipped one to mid on and made way for Will Sanders for 26. Will, never having been one to take his time, smashed his 2nd ball for 6. Obviously inspired by Will, Foxy then hit a 6 via the fielders hands, as they ruined the young spin bowlers figures by taking 20 off 1 over.
A short but effective cameo by Sanders (15 balls, 16 minutes, 26 runs) came to an end as he trapped in front LBW. Will Berry looked to have played a nice straight drive over the field, but was sent packing by a good catch from mid on without troubling the scorer. Russell Newell tried to keep the score going, while also assisting Foxy in his pursuit of a ton, but skied one and was on his way for 7. This brought the skipper to the wicket with Fox needing 16 off 2 overs, and after some skillful strike manipulation Fox was on strike for the last over needing 11 for his ton.
Nearing 3 hours in the blazing sun was sure to be taking it's toll on the openers fitness, and the 3 two's and 2 singles can't have helped. So here we were, 4 runs required from the last ball, Fox on strike. Given the choice I'm sure David would have chosen many different ways to get 4 runs, but after 50 overs (exactly 24 of them on strike) and 3 hours it was a "not quite hard enough" strike to deep mid off that saw Foxy running through treacle to get the 4 runs required to finished a sweaty collapsed, but ultimately happy, heap on the floor 100 not out.
With a target of 232 for victory, Old Elthamians came out in positive mood looking to knock off the runs. O'Reilly and Henley started the bowling for ODs, and both struggled slightly for consistent line and length. This helped OEs get off to the start they required, before Henley got one of them caught smartly by Sanders at mid on, 24 - 1. Jerry made way for Mad dog Minette, and Henley for Captain Lake, both of whom bowled a tidier line and length to slow the scoring slightly before Dave removed Colesy caught at gully by Westmacott, 44 - 2.
A short time later, Craig was in action again taking another gully catch, this time off the bowling of Lake, 58 - 3. The OE number 5 was a batsman very similar in outlook to our own number 5 (Sanders) and came in swinging from ball 1, which slightly spoiled Alex's bowling figures. This spurred on the other batsman who seemed to get going, but this didn't worry Lakey who eventually got the 5 clean bowled, 100 - 4.
The keeper was next in, and after some expert close quarters coaching from Mew, was also cleaned bowled by Lake with the last ball of the over, 104 - 5.
The first ball of the skippers next over saw the 4 bat sent back to the pavillion clean bowled and the skipper was on a hattrick, 111 - 6. Hattrick ball brought everyone in, although possibly not in the right places, and so it proved as the ball was edged between the slips and gullies. Not to worry, the five-fer was achieved shortly after, caught behind by Russ, 116 - 7. And six was the very next ball, LBW, 116 - 8 and the skipper was on a hattrick again!
This time the field was set more thoughtfully, but alas the full toss was dealt with comfortably.
At the other end, WIll Berry had taken over from Minette and after a few good overs, eventually got a wicket, bowled, 125 - 9.After 11 fantastic overs in the summer heat, the skipper gave the ball back to Henley to get us to the bar, which he eventually did with a plumb LBW, 142 all out!
A solid batting performance gave the bowlers plenty to play with to get the 20 point win. Magnificent batting from Fox, and an excellent spell of bowling from Lake was backed up by the whole team.

Harvel away 8/6
Scorecard
OD CUACO 2nd XI got back to winning ways with a 20 point bat second win, which lifts them to fourth in Division 3 league table.
Skipper Alex Lake lost the toss but was delighted as the hosts chose to bat first on an indifferent-looking surface which produced variable bounce throughout.
And things only got better for the visitors as Iestyn Caddy quickly broke the opening partnership with a perfect inswinging yorker.
Sharing the new ball, Billy Rouse had keeper Russ Newell bagging a perfect edge to remove the other opener and the ODs were on their way.
With the seamers fighting over who would bowl next on the helpful surface, it was the biggest of them, Dave Minette, who emerged with the ball. If there were any justice his six exemplary overs would have produced even better figures than 1-15.
Skipper Lake replaced the admirable Iestyn at the Amazon & Tiger Public house end. Maybe it was the proximity of the inviting beer garden, but Lake failed to find his rhythm and he soon replaced himself with young debutant Will Berry. Seemingly unfazed, Will sent down a solid 6 over spell for tidy figures of 1-19.
What runs were being scored were carved high, wide, but not very handsomely behind square on the offside.
By committee, Lake decided to try his luck at the other end, away from the distraction of the beer garden. Rhythm restored, he produced some devastating deliveries to finish with 5-23 from 10 overs.
Meanwhile, Iestyn (2-30) had returned to pick up the useful wicket of the number 7, who had been vainly attempting to show his teammates that it was possible to score in front of the wicket as well as over the top of the slips.
In reply, the ODs lost early wickets in reply as seasonal debutant Nick Gobel fell to a decent catch in the gully and Taylor Emblen was LBW.
David Fox (27) and David Caddy steadied the ship with some sensible shot selection, taking the total up towards 50 before the partnership was broken with Fox LBW.
As it was, this brought young Billy Rouse to the crease and he put the Harvel attack to the sword with a quick-fire 50 not out featuring one ball lost in the woods and the spillage of drinks in the beer garden. At the other end Dave Caddy (32 no) was a calm presence and the perfect foil.
So in the end a convincing win for the ODs and just reward for a fine team effort, with every player giving of their best.

HSBC home 1/6

Scorecard
This week OD CUACO played host to a HSBC side who were without a win yet this season and languishing in the relegation places. OD CUACO were looking for a quick return to form after narrowly missing out on the opportunity to go top of the table by 11 clear points last week. The result of failing to take the last Addington wicket was they actually went into this game placed 6th in the table. The OD’s won the toss and elected to field on a damp looking pitch that may provide some assistance to the seamers early on. HSBC got off to a solid start, seeing off both the openers whilst keeping the scoreboard moving. It wasn’t until 20th over that Rohan Patel had Ken Slater caught by his younger brother Eashan off a top edge at square leg. After Rohan found his rhythm he bowled well and was the pick of the bowlers taking 3-31 off his 10 overs. He was assisted with some tight bowling at the other end by Billy Rouse who was unlucky not to take a wicket. That was the story throughout the innings with 2 catches put down but numerous other chances that, on another day may well have gone to hand, narrowly missing fielders. Take nothing away from the HSBC batting performance, they paced their innings well keeping wickets in hand allowing veteran Howard Abbett to score quickly towards the end of the innings. He took great pleasure in informing me in the bar after the match that, prior to striking his way to 42 and marshalling the HSBC innings up to a total of 189-9 he hadn’t scored a run yet this season.
At tea both camps appeared reasonably happy that they could go on and win the match with the HSBC total probably par for the course. However it was much of the same story as the previous week for OD CUACO, allowing the 1 stand out opening bowler (Andrew Faulkner) take 5 top order wickets in his 15 over spell. Wickets fell at regular intervals, apart from a promising stand by club top run scorer Billy Rouse and Will Sanders none of the top order really got a start. With time running out for both sides it was left to James Alvey and Alex Lake to see out the final 14 overs to prevent HSBC collecting maximum points.
With other results going OD CUACO’s way after that loss they find themselves moving up to 5th in the league however they need to find some form quickly if they are serious about their ambition for back to back promotions.

Bromley Common away 18/5

Report One
After missing out on a win we all knew we could of had the week before, ODs turned up with a merciless attitude. The skipper inspected the wicket and decided he wanted to bat on this "absolute road". He skilfully won the toss, and that's what we did.
Foxy and Will Sanders opened the batting against 2 quick opening bowlers, one of which had the better of Will for 11. This brought DS to the crease who defiantly helped fox see off their openers. A wicket from the spinner brought the return of Craig Westmacott, his first game for a decade. With Foxy ticking away and Westmacott finding his form (the sweep was well and truly out) the runs piled on. However Craig fell for 29 and another few wickets fell cheaply, even Russ 'the finisher' didn't get going. The skipper stepped in at the end with some quick runs to get us to 199, the foxes 73 being instrumental.
The team stepped out on the field after tea feeling confident that a tough target had been set. The opposition however felt differently after a quick scoring opening partnership that capitalised on a slightly lackadaisical start from OD Cuaco. At 63-0 the balance had slipped Bromley Commons way but Henley soon found his areas and reined them in, taking the first wicket. Then the mad dog stepped up, dispatching 1 and 4 with some aggressive bowling. Despite a couple of partnerships the bowlers kept working hard and the wickets kept falling. Rohan bowled tightly and got a well deserved wicket, it was taken phenomenally by man of the moment David Fox. However the pick of the bowlers was Lakey (4-22) and it was left to Liam to finish them off for 184 all out.
A good win that proves we can do big things in this league!
Dan (ex runway, now run machine) Smedley
Report Two
OD CUACO 199 - 8 ; Bromley Common 184 all out.
OD CUACO visited local rivals Bromley Common and finally left with a fine 20-point win in a match that had all three results possible going into a tense final 10 overs.
Alex Lake won the toss and chose to bat first and he would not have been disappointed to see the his team post a total of 199 for 8 from their 50 overs, on an excellent surface that had something in it for batsmen and bowlers alike.
David Fox (73) combined well in stands of 54 with Dan Smedley (19) and then 67 with welcome returnee Craig Westmacott (29), before an aggressive 29 from Lake together with cameos from Russ Newell and Liam Bullock pushed the score to the brink of maximum batting points.
The Commoners were quick out of the blocks in reply, with the impressive Hall (40) taking advantage of any loose offerings in an opening stand of 63. When he departed caught at the wicket off the wholehearted Henley (1-30) the game changed and there was always the feeling amongst the visiting players that the game was there to be won. That the ODs achieved this was down several fine performances with the ball, backed up by some special moments in the field.
In addition to the excellent Henley, canny seamer Dave Minette (3-24) put in the hard yards for 9 testing overs and Alex Lake was inspired in another 9 over burst which yielded four wickets at a cost of just 22.
Returning late on, opening bowler Liam Bullock did exactly the job his captain would have wanted, picking up the last Bromley wicket with the hosts 16 shy of their target.
No-nonsense northern newcomer Jerry O’Reilly grasped hold of an excellent catch diving forward at gully, veteran keeper Newell snaffled two sharp chances behind the wicket and Fox rolled back the years with a low one-handed slip catch off promising young slow left-armer Rohan Patel.
So overall a satisfying win and performance by the ODs, which leaves them handily positioned in 2nd after the first two games.
Downham & Bellingham at home 11th May
Scorecard
And so with the pre season friendlies out the way, the whites well and truly dusted off the mighty II's welcomed Downham and Bellingham for the first league game of the season.
A rain affected game saw OD's win the toss and elect to field. They got off to a good start with the first 2 D&B wickets falling in the first couple of overs to Henley. At one stage OD's had D&B 70-6 but good resistance from their middle order saw them reach 171-9 from their 50 overs.
Bullock and Minette were the pick of the bowlers with Bullock constantly beating the outside edge and Minette picking up 3-23 off 13 overs.
The II's were given 36 overs to reach their target and couldn't have got off to a better start with Sanders and Smedley amassing 80-0 in the first 15 overs. Sanders was then out for a quite brilliant 66, hopefully that is just an preview of what we are to expect for the rest of the season. Good support was given by Smedley who ended up with 36.
Requiring just 4 per over with 9 wickets remaining the match would have appeared as good as won. However a combination some tight bowling from Goddard and the OD's batsmen struggling to find form it came down to the II's requiring 20 with 2 overs remaining of the reduced total of 36. We were denied the grandstand finish however due to bad light. And with that anti climax the match was over.
OD's took 11 points and D&B 10, however OD's will see it as an opportunity missed to go joint top of the table. The opposition were greatly improved from some of the opponents last year however not by that great an extent it will have the OD boys quaking in their bowling boots. All signs point to it being another exciting season for the mighty II's.
