ODC 3XI V OLD ELTHAMIANS 15th August
Scorecard
A strong ODCuaco third team arrived at Old Elthamian’s determined to grab a second win in succession. The toss won by ODC (tails never fails), OE were sent into bat and were met by some miserly bowling and a strong fielding performance, with all being lifted by Abishek Patel’s enthusiasm. Tom Rathbone took a corking catch at slip to start the ball rolling and from then on wickets continued to fall throughout as the home team became frustrated with some accurate bowling. OE’s skipper was their danger man and particularly liked driving straight but could not get the ball past Gordon Pratt, fielding in inspired fashion at mid-on. His innings was ended after charging down the wicket and being bowled by Jake Owen who ended up the pick of the bowlers with four wickets. Andy Hall was particularly stingy and a super 10 over spell from Joe East was well backed up by Callum MaClennan who was unlucky not to take a wicket or two. Sam Parke kept without fuss and even managed a stumping standing back to Owen. The first boundary came in the 19th over and to illustrate how accurate the bowling was five of the seven wickets to fall were castled and ODC were set 135 to win.
Patel and Steve Smith opened up and started positively before Patel was bowled by a ball that cut back at him. Chad Spencer got straight off the mark, on the back of a half century the previous weekend, and was looking to take the game away until a mix up led to his run out. Rathbone came in and was looking untroubled, until he picked out the square leg fielder, who took a super catch above his head. All this time, Steve Smith was the calming influence at the other end, and now had Parke for company who was looking confident until he was trapped by a good ball that pinned him playing off the back foot. This brought Jake Owen to the crease, who had obviously had his Weetabix for breakfast, and he set to work to keep the run rate up and take the game to an energised OE.
This useful partnership was ended when Smith was bowled and MaClennan (junior) came out with the game in the balance. Owen and McClennan frustrated the home side with some superb running between the wickets and anything loose was punished by Owen who was advancing towards fifty. Once McClennan had departed Owen claimed a half century and the fielding was becoming ragged. The tide finally turned OD’s way when Robin East hit the shot of the day back over the bowlers head for a boundary and in true selfless Dad fashion Robin then deliberately (I think) gave his wicket away to give Sam East the chance to hit the winning runs, which he duly accomplished with the minimum of fuss. Owen finished on 55 not out and OD had won with two wickets and two overs to spare with everyone contributing towards a superb result.
Man of the Match Jake Owen.

Scorecard
The skipper asked me to produce a match report and try and mention everyone’s name. It is very difficult because I’d never met some of our team so no doubt he’ll forgive me for just mentioning him.
Not an easy day with a Team cobbled together with has been’s (me) and non-cricket playing friends. He had set up the ground before the match and tried hard to give everyone a game which we declined! However John and Rousey once again performed miracles to get enough payers to field four elevens.
Very few high spots, none in fact. However Elliot Avis bowled two fine overs as did Mick Boyden who took the only wicket. We scored 42 and they won in 7.1 overs with a last ball wide by 9 wickets. Wisden confirms this is the shortest match in history with the players able to get back to the pavilion in time for the lunchtime news!
