4th XI Season 2017
Saturday 22nd April 2017, St. Dunstans College Away
St. Dunstans College 154 all out v OD Cuaco (4) 173 all out
At the start of last season we were given a 'good hiding' by the college eleven. For quite a while during this game it looked very similar. We won the toss and as the they were reluctant to bat first we did.
So, many new players and off we went. Elliot Peters (13) looking really good after three well struck fours played what even he said was a a 'poor' shot and was bowled by a straight one. Kevin Harding (7) got in and then top edged one to a sub fielder from our own team so second wicket down.
Stephen Smith (30) was his normal self but had been unlucky with numerous well hit shots finding the oppo.
Louis Boyden (41) batted really well and much more is expected from him this season in possibly higher teams. At £1.5m he is a snip! Andy Rouse (19) held things together helping Louis until he decided to meet a medium pacer halfway down the track and was stumped. Cameos from Phil Parke (24), Bob (17) and Eric Clemming (2), followed by a mini collapse Mick Boyden (0)Harry Dean (0) run out and Mark Whittle (0) not out meant we finished with 173 BUT eleven balls left.
After tea our opening bowlers were Harry Deans (7-1-39-1) and Mark Whittle (6-1-48-0). Mark was particularly unlucky in that his last over went for half of his runs! Unfortunately the opening partnership they bowled at put on 107 and looked like they had won the game for them. So with no wickets down Eric Clemmings (8-0-21-3) and Mick Boyden ((8-2-32-1) came on and we were back in it. New player Elliott Peters (3.5-12-2) and the returning Harry Deans saw us home.
So a good start to the season. More to come from upcoming youngsters and new older players.

Saturday 21st May 2017, Orpington 5th XI Home
The boys arrived at The Warren to find a slightly damp and green looking wicket and an overgrown outfield. Having decided to shorten the game to 36 overs we lost the toss and were asked to bat.
Kevin Harding (14) and JP Carmier (43) got us off to a flying start scoring runs for fun at a rate of 5 an over. Which was incredibly impressive considering the difficulty of the task. Unfortunately, both lost their wickets within an over of each other and Will Black (50) and Luke Hunter (50) ensured that no further losses occurred before drinks. After the short drink break the runs dried up for a couple of overs before a rallying cry from skipper Andy Rouse inspired both Will and Luke to cut loose. The boundaries soon started to flow and would have done on an even more regular basis had the outfield been a touch quicker. However both of them ran well between the wickets when the ball did get held up. In just under 20 overs the pair added 108 to the score. With a few overs to go the risks taken increased until Will one ball after scoring a fantastic 50 was run out. The skip played a selfless innings and was unfortunate to be caught one-handed at mid-on. Luke followed next ball holing out in the deep to a terrific diving catch. He too had only just reached 50 shortly before his dismissal, a great improvement for his 2 ducks so far this season. Calum Hider managed 1 or 2 lusty blows before the OD’s innings close on 184-6 after 36 overs; a big effort considering the conditions.
After the tea break it was left to Mark (6-2-6-0) and Fin (5-1-8-2) Irvine to get our bowling innings underway. And they didn’t disappoint. They both frustrated the batters with allowing them no freebies and Fin removed the openers thanks to two regulation catches by Kevin and Luke, although the latter made yet another simple catch look like the most difficult he’d ever taken. Calum (6-1-11-2) and Ben Smith (4-0-23-1) replaced the openers and both found success. Calum took a superb one handed catch to remove the number 4 bat whilst Ben got rid of the dangerous looking number 5 thanks to a well held catch by Mark. Calum soon took his second and at the drinks break it looked like there was only going to be one winner with the oppo already 5 down and scoring at under 2 an over. It was left to Mick Boyden (6-2-8-3) and Will East (4.2-2-2-2) to finish Orpington off. A fine array of slow/spin bowling forced the batsman to make errors. Two were clean bowled; Mick tempted one down the wicket who was duly stumped by the skip; while the final 2 were caught, one by 2009’s fielder of the year which brought great cheers from the supporters and then Will took a fantastic diving return catch off his own bowling.
Orpington were bowled out for 60 and this left OD’s 4th XI with their 3rd win of the season and their 3rd lot of 20 points. A truly great performance and result where all contributed in some respect. Long may this run continue.

Saturday 3rd June 2017, Bexley CC 6thXI Away
ODCUACO 4XI V Bexley CC 6XI
ODCUACO 64 for 90 (40 overs) tied with Bexley CC 64 all out (30.1 overs)
Another away game for 4XI, another sunny afternoon and another airing for Kev Harding’s spare trousers. ODs lost the toss and were put into bat with a batting line up that looked to be relatively strong. However, this was not the case on this occasion as all the top order batsmen struggled against decent bowling on a bowler friendly, greenish surface. Harding and Rouse managed to put up some resistance and reached double figures and Fin Irvine manged to bat untroubled to ensure that ODs batted out their overs albeit for a very modest 64.
A subdued team tackled the feast of a tea provided by the oppo and with energy levels restored with jammy dodgers and a stirring team talk from skipper Rouse, ODs set about trying to get something from the game. Thank goodness for the Colts !!
A good opening spell from Irvine( 6-0-20-2) and outstanding debutant Kai Bennett (8-0-16-4) built up the pressure from the off and wickets soon began to fall. At drinks Bexley were 32 for 5 and so the game was on. The openers were replaced by the excellent East ( 9-6-4-3) and Parke who kept the squeeze on with Parke (4-0-12-1) removing the potentially big hitting number 6. Good field placement from the experienced skipper and good energy in the field from Harding, Osborne and Parr cut off a great number of runs which proved decisive as the wickets continued to fall. Still with plenty of overs to go and only one run required for victory but with only one wicket remaining, East got the experienced number 11 to push a little too hard at another accurate delivery and Osborne took a sharp catch close in. Match tied!
A good bowling display by both teams but a general agreement that it was an afternoon to forget for batsmen. Many thanks to Jane East for scoring duties.

Saturday 24th June 2017, Old Wilsonians Away
Beat Old Wilsonians 5th XI by 134 runs
OD CUACO 277 for 4 (40 overs) Eric Clemming 106*
OWs 143 all out (35 overs) Steve Sawko 3-16
A local away game from the 4’s this week and batting first ODCuaco got off to a strong start with a good opening standard between Kevan Harding (22) and skipper Andy Rouse ( 44). William Black (40) helped build on this positive start scoring quite freely and a promising partnership was developing with Liam Osborne before the latter was run out attempting an ambitious “two”. No worries required though as Eric Clemming (106*) arrived at the crease to execute a tremendous exhibition of batting, firing the ball around the park with a torrent of boundaries, pausing only occasionally with a single in order that he could have a rest at the non-strikers end, before returning to the strike to continue with increasing ferocity and bat speed. He was able supported by Billy Rouse (27*) once Black had departed.
So with a decent (!) total to defend Rouse set about organising his bowlers and fielders to take 10 wickets to gain maximum points. This was done with 5 overs to spare with Steve Sawko being the pick finishing with 3-16 from 7 good overs whilst Raj Raghavan wore down the opposition’s patience with 10-4-10-1 including a sharp catch. (Off his own bowling of course).
