5th XI Season 2017
Saturday 6th May 2017, Brasted Chart & Toys Hill Away
Brasted Chart and Toys Hill (1's) 186-7 (40 overs) v OD Cuaco (5's) 139-9 (40 overs)
So after more excellent availability Andy Hall found a fixture for our 5th team against a first eleven so no pressure. The 5's were a mixture of Oldies, Middlies and Young Uns and everybody contributed.
We used six bowlers with Martin Couch 7-0-30-1 an Old Un and Fin Irvine 8-2-30-0 a Young Un opening our attack. They both bowled good lines and didn't have any luck at all. Next up were two Middlies in James Tinker 7-0-29-1 and Mark 'dad' Irvine 8-1-41-4. Again good lines with chances off both but numerous not going to hand.
Our final two bowlers were Ollie Jasper 5-0-23-0 who had probably the worst luck of our bowlers and on OD adult debut was Kai Bennett 5-0-12-1 , really excellent figures particularly in respect that he is an under 13.
Great things are expected from all three of our Young Guns.
The fielding was really good particularly our youngsters, but also Mark, James and another new player, Dave Illing. Andy Parker took one for the team on the chest that saved four and sterling work from Mani Sethu at fine leg. Martin Couch chasing a ball did an excellent dive but to the trained eye looked more like a trip. Luckily he is fine and we have banned him from any future dives.
The star of the fielding has to be Old Un Howard Smith who took three excellent catches from behind the stumps.
So a run chase against a first team and we did really well. Andy (26) and Dave (15) got us away. Kai (6) was unlucky. Mani (3) tried to bash us home. Ollie (17) batted well as did Fin (22) and this was a tricky uncovered wicket.
An Ugly (17) from skipper Bob and chasing big hits James (0) and Mark (17) perished. Howard (0 not) and Martin (0) saw out the last over.
A really good day and if Andy Hall can work his magic again we will have another fifth team match this week.

Saturday 13th May 2017, Stone CC Away
Stone CC (1) 129-5 (26 overs). V OD Cuaco (5) 128-9 (35 overs)
After a late flap and flurry of emails and telephone calls The Travelling Wilberries had eleven players and made there way to Northfleet to be greeted by a wicket that had no demons in it.
Andy Parker (0) said 'I missed a straight one!' But after that everyone contributed. Stephen Smith (18) was caught going for a big one. Fin Irvine (22) which included five fours batted very maturely and was beaten by a very good ball, I was umpiring so I saw it! Our next 'young gun' , Noah DeVaux (13) was also looking really good even after being struck full on the toe which must have hurt! Robin East (4) launched one over the umpires head and was then bowled by a full one. Our last two young guns, Stephen Barratt (25) and Will East (8) again batted well and showed the potential in the club. Mark Irvine (9) and Bob (2) both got 'triggered', but they would say that wouldn't they . Howard 'I can't run!' Smith (1 not) and Martin Couch (6 not) saw out the last couple of overs. So we finished on 128-9 but sort of knew it probably wouldn't be enough.
Martin Couch (3-0-11-1) got a wicket in his first over but after injuring his shoulder had to come off. At the other end Will East (7-1-22-0) bowled a really tidy spell with absolutely no luck. Fin Irvine (7-0-45-3) bowled an excellent spell particularly after going for 26 in his first two overs. We were unlucky in that numbers two and three for the oppo scored 83 of their 129 runs.
The skipper then rotated quickly to give all of the bowlers a go. Robin East (2-0-9-0), Noah DeVaux (4-1-15-1), Mark Irvine (2-0-10-0) and Stephen Barratt (1-0-2-0) all bowled well. Stephen to get more overs next game!
The fielding was excellent and Noah was unlucky with a direct hit run out as the umpire appeared unsighted.
Thanks to all the mums and dads who brought players. Special thanks to Andy DeVaux who brought his whites but was usurped by Will East. Also many thanks to Graham Smedley for umpiring.

Saturday 27th May, Streatham & Marlborough 6th XI
OD Cuaco 5th XI 81 all out (31.4 overs) Streatham & Marlborough 6th XI 82-9 (32.4 overs)
Andy Hall worked his magic again and got us a 5th xi game against Streatham and Marlborough 6th xi, who play in the same division as our 4th xi, at The Griffin ground next door to Herne Hill Velodrome.
We lost the toss and were asked to bat. The two openers departed quite early but Michael Parr marked his return to the club with a few lusty blows in his 29. The rest of the batsmen struggled against a very good 6th xi attack where Sean Ryan's excellent spell of inswing bowling and William Cain's leg spin put the batsmen under the cosh. S&M have two very talented young prospects in those two.
The skipper's pep talk reminded everyone that bowling and fielding basics make such a difference and implored the bowlers to put their batsmen under the same pressure that we had experienced.
Opening bowlers James Tinkler and Stephen Barratt did exactly what was required and had S&M at 8-1 after ten overs. Hughie Deans and Jonny Thompson took over and kept it tight with wickets starting to fall, the runs only overtaking the overs bowled in the 14th over. Great pressure built which is so important when defending a small total. Kai Bennett bowled a beautiful five overs and we got them to 68-9 with a couple of well taken run outs from Parr and Deans.
Unfortunately the 10th wicket didn't arrive. We kept trying but Muir's 43 not out proved to be the difference between the teams. A most enjoyable game and all bowlers should be proud of how they bowled. At tea we could have folded but the team really gave it a go and almost secured an unlikely win only to be undone by a good innings from someone who usually plays his cricket at a higher level.
The skipper was very pleased with the fielding display with Richard Bennett showing a very good arm when throwing in from the boundary. Kai may have had a word about Richard's batting, but the old man can throw a cricket ball. Special mention for Hughie Deans' 4-fer, a 5-fer if you include his run out.

24th June Beckenham (5) 200 all out (37 overs) v OD Cuaco (5) 173 - 6 (40 overs)
This week The Travelling Wilberries were on the road to leafy Sydenham after more magic from The Fixture Magician, Andy Hall. There was an £8 parking fee at the leisure centre but the Wilberries are known for their tightness and we all parked outside.
So we lost the toss and Beckenham decided to bat. Mark Irvine (7-0-37-1) was particularly unlucky with lots of edges. On debut Dave Hibbin (4-0-34-1) bowled well taking a wicket with his third ODCuaco ball. Eat your heart out 'Danger'.
Our first change bowlers then both bowled a lovely spell. Ollie Jasper has decided to reinvent himself as a slow bowler and (8-0-25-3) says not a bad decision. At the other end Isaac Loader (7-0-36-4) was also on the money and amongst the wickets.
Next on were Fin Irvine (6-1-24-1) who has also decided slow is the way to go and Mark Whittle (5-0-21-0) both bowled an impressive spell. Throughout all of this the bowlers were up against the Beckenham skipper who was class and bashed 89 and without him the result would certainly have been different.
Good fielding with 'H' snaffling a catch and two stumping’s. Catches for Dave Hibbin, excellent and Mark Irvine and Steve Smith. We had another newcomer, albeit a dad, Richard Loader who fielded excellently.
So chasing 201, Andy Parker (22) and Fin Irvine (20) put on over 50 for the first wicket. Up next were Mark Whittle (17) and Ollie Jasper (1) perishing in the chase. Isaac Loader (11) also went the same way. Steve Smith (40 not out) surprised everyone with the way he started but then blocking out the final over to ensure fantasy points didn't surprise this reporter! 🤣
Then newcomer dad Richard Loader (24) bashed his runs with 'proper' cricket shots. Dave Hibbin ended on (2 not out) with Mark Irvine waiting to go in thinking Steve Smith would give it a go but Fantasy Cricket rules!!
A really good day, with cricket played the way it should, plus an excellent tea. Cricket doesn't get better. Keep up the fixtures please Magician.

1st July OD Cuaco (5's) 130-9 (40 overs) Bexley Red Caps 134-5 (36.3 overs)
So the Fixture Magician, Andy Hall, had done his work again and The Travelling Wilberries were at home. To enjoy one of Joan's sumptuous teas. It made us a bit sluggish in the field but who cares.
We were up against a pretty strong Bexley team with an opening bowler who was pretty rapid, some good youngsters and adults in their early thirties and a couple of fifty year olds. We definitely beat them adding our ages together!!
Our openers, Kai Bennett (18) and Michael Oprych (24) put on 25 for the opening partnership with Kai hitting four fours but played a bit of an expansive drive on a pretty dodgy wicket and was beaten by a low one.
Dave Vigus (1), Ollie Jasper (2) and Steve Smith (2) were all then out fairly quickly with the wicket doing all sorts. Richard Loader (49 not out) and his son Isaac (7) set about a family partnership which was brief this time but won't be next.
Skipper Bob (3) was beaten by a skidder and Richard was joined by Emily Ainger (2) on debut. Graham 'Actore' Johnson (3) then helped Richard and was out with nine balls remaining. Howard Smith (5 not out) and Richard kept out the oppo with Richard unfortunately falling one short of his maiden fifty for the OD's. There is more to come!
As often happens at the Warren the wicket decided to behave for their innings but we did make valuable inroads. Kai (10-4-20-0) and Ollie (10-2-26-3) were excellent and bowled two excellent spells.
Our first change bowlers Emily (8.3-0-42-0) and Isaac (8-0-36-2) also bowled really well. The fielding was top drawer and good catches for Michael and then Richard both off of Isaac. An excellent game with our plethora of youngsters really excelling.

8th July Catford Cyphers (4's) 152 all out (39.3 overs) v OD Cuaco (5's) 153-7 (40 overs)
This week a short drive to the Jubilee Ground at Catford for The Travelling Wilberries. On a sunny day we win the toss and bat. This will test the fives as Catford are third in the table in the division above our fours.
Andy Parker (16) and Michael Oprych (6) patiently saw off the oppos first four bowlers who were very good. Next up were our youngsters. Stephen Barratt (1) got a good one. Isaac Loader (0) slipped and was run out backing up. Johnny Thompson (0) carrying a side strain was another who got a good ball.
The next pair Stephen Smith (48) and Richard Loader (57) made hay with the next set of bowlers rattling along at a very good rate with a partnership of 95. Our last two batsmen, Graham Smedley (5 not) and Captain Bob (3 not) struggled against the returning front line bowlers and the fact that Bob couldn't run!!
But a total of 153 off forty overs would have been taken before the innings started so now up to the bowlers and how they responded.
We needed to keep the runs down and take wickets and all five of our bowlers did that perfectly. James Tinkler (10-3-32-1) and Stephen Barratt (10-2-24-2) got us off to an excellent start. Johnny Thompson (2-1-4-0) aggravated his side strain but his two overs were what was required.
Isaac Loader (9.3-0-44-5) and Dad Richard (8-0-37-1) came to the party. Particularly Isaac whose second spell was 'excellent ' and Howard doesn't say that often! Catford had a really good bat who finished on 79 not out. The boys gave him a single and winkled the rest out. So Isaac's first fifer and Richard's first fifty for OD's so a good day.
The fielding was also really good with catches for Johnny, Michael and Stephen. Stephens was brave as it was the tenth wicket and a skyer which he called and took. Michael Oprych must be given pride of place as their skipper absolutely leathered one and Michael at mid wicket took a stunning diving catch which probably turned the game and gave us belief. H was his normal tidy self with a couple of very close stumpings.
So a great day and a win by one run, onwards and upwards for The Wilberries.

15th July Old Wilsonians (5's) 216 - 9 (40 overs) v OD Cuaco (5's) 127 - 9 (40 overs)
The Fixture Magician, Andy Hall, had worked his magic and our game this week was exactly one mile from the home of cricket so almost home!
Wilsonians are third in the same division as our fours and have seasoned 'Old uns' and experienced youngsters.
This week we gave adult debuts to Sam Cordingley and Josh Boorer. Also Emily Ainger played only her second game and we also welcomed back Dave Illing after a 'bit' of toe surgery!!
The oppos front three batsmen were all very good and contributed three quarters of their runs at a brisk rate. Our opening bowler Kai Bennett (5-2-18-0) and Josh Boorer (5-0-25-0) bowled well with absolutely no luck. Next up Sam Cordingley (5-0-32-1) and Graham (Actore) Johnson (6-0-52-0) with Sam bowling well taking his first adult wicket and the Actore possibly needs to learn his lines better.
Emily then replaced Sam and slowed the rate but also (10-1-34-6) bowled stunningly and is now a member of the bowling honours board club. Dave Illing (1-0-21-0) took a bit of tap but the long handle was out.
Last but not least Andy Parker (8-1-25-1) which included three dropped chances and his figures made this reporter have to eat his words! Mind you Parkerman dropped two of the chances.
The fielding was excellent with Steve Smith shining with three catches and a run out so fantasy cricket has certainly improved his fielding! Catches also for Parkerman, Sam Cordingley and Dave Illing with Howard taking a great stumping. Our three youngsters, Kai, Josh and Sam were really good in the field.
The Wilsonians opening bowlers were a good with a youngster who took three wickets and a Kent over 60 who got one for five from his ten overs which meant our start was slow.
But all the side had a bat. Dave Vigus (10), Steve Smith (24), Kai (7), Dave Illing (2), Actore (10), Parkerman (24),Josh (0), Sam (5) and Emily (0). Richard Bennett (2 not) and Howard (2 not) were both there at the end. Another good Saturday for the fives and a day to remember for Emily. If Nick Worsley wants Emily for the ones I could probably find a place for her brother Andrew!
