2013 season review

Troops, as we reach the conclusion of the cricket season (a sad time for all of us) I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that played on a Sunday this year. From the 11 that played in the first friendly of the season to the 11 members of the bluearmy that sealed promotion on that famous day in August with Billy Rouse smashing a 4 with a ball to spare. (most important victory in the clubs recent history)

Well played to Aaron for being the blue army's top run scorer, and Ainger for being the top wicket taker. Andrew was also the highest wicket taker in our league as he is simply world class with the orange ball, as is 'spin twin' Jake 'Spiderman' Caddy.

From Jimmy Alvey's first over against Catford to Simon's drop on Ainger's hattrick ball against Bromley its been a fantastic season and one that makes me happy.
Special mention goes to Tom Churcher for being the only ever present member of the team this season!!

Sunday cricket is becoming more and more important for the club and it is more than likely that next season the standard of cricket on a Sunday will be as good, if not better than that on a Saturday. So pre season starts now, i'm expecting some serious gym work throughout the winter, and visualization for the start of next season.
Finally, thanks to Chris for being my right hand man throughout the year, Wendy for scoring, Bob and Geoff for umpiring and to Grace for her fantastic teas! You are all world class!!!

Roll on next year troops, the war will be tough as we face the big boys in division one, but we are a band of brothers and we will survive!!!

After a disappointing Saturday for all teams, the Blue Army were looking come back with a win to keep their 100% winning streak going. The skip moved the game a week forward in order escape the chances of an early fine on tour, however this did not put the team off, and they were ready hold on to the winning streak like an Entoparasite hangs onto an animal.

As we arrived at the Neville Ground the scene was set for another Blue army victory, and we did not disappoint.  The team got off to good start with the skip again winning the toss and opting to bat first and there couldn't have been any other option with probably the best batting track we played on this year and a fast outfield, only second to the Home of cricket at Od Cuaco. The opening partnership saw Ben Webster and Taylor Emblem to take to the crease, they both got good starts playing good shots and dispatching the bad balls, the partnership seemed to be stronger than Yaya Toure playing in the CDM role. However everything that goes up must come down and both Ben and Taylor were caught, Taylor for 12 and Ben for 29, setting the platform for a solid innings. In came number's 3 & 4 and after Tom Churcher had a serious cricketing injury, the batting line up had to be reshuffled, so Jake Caddy came in at 3 and the skip Nick Worsley at 4 both batted well hitting the ball hard making good progress and were starting to deracinate the opposition bowling attack however Worsley creaming the ball straight to the fielder in the air broke the partnership of 85 runs and Worsley fell on 42. In came Ainger now reunited with the other half of the spin twins, but was out shortly after looking for a big shot. The wickets then started to fall with Caddy getting out for 60 and Churchers shot getting plucked out of the air by an experienced cricketer. Late runs from Will Berry and James Alvey led to the blue army ending on 199 for 9.

After a delicious tea the boys were back out determined to bowl out the oppo.  Tunbridge Wells seemed to have strong batsmen and on a pitch like this, there was some doubt that 199 was a good enough target, however the bowlers performed incredibly well pinning the batsmen back which inevitably led to wickets. The first was taken by Liam Bullock with a peach of a delivery that Andrew Mew would have been proud of, clipping the off stump bail against a good batsmen. Both Bullock and Alvey got the boys off to a great start and finished on good figures, Alvey, 5 over's for only 12 runs and Bullock, 7 over's, 2 wickets for 15 runs. Then in came the big guns Tim Smedley and Simon Hunter bowling good lines with Tim being unfortunate not to get a wicket. However Simon was picking up wickets left right and centre, breaking down the opposition like a Histozyme inside the body it was great spectacle with Simon ending on 4 wickets for 27. After dismissing their two most dangerous batsmen the result was clear, the blue army would keep the 100% winning streak dismissing Tunbridge for 131.

It was a great performance from the boys showing tubs of talent, and why we are formidable force in this league, highlights were Jake Caddy 60 runs and Simon Hunter 4 for 27 great performance , now 4 in 4 let's make it 5 in 5

CRICKET!!!

Home to Bromley Common

Scorecard

Yet another CRACKING DAY at the home of cricket saw a world class Sunday outfit lead by Nicholas Worsley take on what appeared to be a under 14 Bromley common side. Wondering whether the oppo would contain anyone who would set a huge total, Nick chose to bat first on the arrival of umpire Bob Lake.

With the first test drawing to a close, with a tantalizing finish in store, Dan Webster’s digital radio had to be removed from his hands and replaced with his bat as he went out to open the batting with Saturday skip Aaron. Clearly the England match saw the two in some sort of a runs with the first 10 overs being smashed for 88. Aaron scored a quick fire 60 before departing and Dan “laid the cement whilst the rest of the team laid the bricks” (quote from Nick). Ben Webster entered the scene and was yorked by a swinging delivery. He was quickly followed by Dan Webster (23) and brother Chris (13) who needs to hit the gym slightly harder allowing him to clear fielders on the boundary rather than stick it down their throats. Tom Churcher and Skipper Worsley rebuilt the innings and set yet another strong base from which to play from where Tom (41) and Nick (33) had a steady partnership that allowed the spin twins to score late runs and top up the OD’s total to 252-7 off their 40 overs with Jake ending up 36 not out.

After yet more wonderful teas it was the turn of the ODs bowlers. James Alvey and Chris Webster opened the bowling and after the first two overs were maidens, Bromley common started positively on their way. James’ 5th over brought the break through with an LBW. Chris then picked up their other opener to claim his 100th OD’s wicket and then managed to bounce the BCCC number three batsman of 7 feet tall. Both openers ended with a wicket a piece and left the rest of the job to Simon and the spin twins. Simon bowled 4 overs from the golf course end and picked up a wicket, bowling their number 4.

It was the introduction of Danger Ainger that sparked the OD’s to really turn on the gas. Never before has there been 9 fielders all within 10 yards of the bat in a limited overs game but this was made possible by AA. Andy picked up his first wicket in his 4th over and after tight bowling from Jake at the other end, Ainger picked up 2 in 2 in his 5th over. This meant hat trick ball. Fielders got even closer. After some cheeky sledging from Simon as the new batsmen walked in, the pressure was on. Andy flighted up the ball and the batsmen swung through with a slog sweep, getting poor connection. The ball went head height to Simon at silly mid on where he dropped an absolute dolly. This left the rest of the team glad that he would be at a wedding the coming Saturday. Andrew missed out on the 3 in 3 but did manage to take his 2nd 5 wicket Haul in 3 Sunday games. Jake picked up two wickets from the other end and OD’s bowled out BCCC for a mere 95.

So the #Bluearmy march on and our 100% Orange ball win ratio continues. Special mentions to Aaron for his 60 and Ainger for the 5 fer. Also thanks a lot to Bob for umpiring, Grace for the teas and Wendy for scoring. 100%

Scorecard

It was a warm summer’s day…perfect for cricket. The XI, all present and accounted for, seemed to be filled with a great vigour for the day’s big event. After some truly marvellous work with the ‘lucky 2p’, the Skip won the toss and decided to have a bat (the only option if you are a Boycott-idealist and love cricket I suppose).

The innings started strongly with some free-flowing shots from Yogi and Tom Churcher, beginning to build a strong foundation, just what the Skip ordered. Unfortunately with a couple of mistimed shots, a couple of wickets fell leaving us 2 down around the 15 over marker. An interesting development occurred as Ben Webster was flabbergasted at being given out (admittedly with a very quick decision) LBW. The story of much of the rest of the innings was entirely symmetrical with what had come before, with numbers four to seven all getting starts and then getting out, leaving us slightly precariously placed at 120-8 with 8 overs to go. Jake Caddy, supported by James Alvey and Simon Hunter led the innings to a positive close; a particular highlight being a very elegant six straight back over the bowlers head. With the score placed at 168 off our 40, there was a quiet optimism that had replaced the slight worry only 8 overs previous.

Tea, as usual, was magnificent, although there wasn’t a potato in sight, and gave us that extra energy to go out, leave our deckchairs and take the field. The new ball was shared between James Alvey and Chris Webster, and the first ball of the innings was something slightly aberrant to normal procedure; pitching on middle, nipping back and smashing into the top of off stump, there was much delight as James removed, what was rumoured to be, their danger-man. This was followed 3 balls later with another wicket, leaving Catford reeling at 1-2. The third followed soon after with a ball that kept “low as a bungalow”, and wickets fell at regular intervals in the following overs, with the spin twins (Caddy and Ainger) sharing 4 between them for only 24 runs off their 16 overs. After a great shout from the clubhouse that (finally) signalled a Murray win, Chris and Simon Hunter chipped in with the final 3 wickets to seal a comfortable, 73-run victory for the team, who maintain their 100% record.

Many thanks to Wendy for scoring, Geoff Alvey for umpiring and let’s get training for next week! #100% #worldclass

Match tea
Scorecard

First game of the season for the undefeated XI, so the pressure was on. It was possibly the hottest day of the year; and to make sure the heat did not debilitate our performance fluids were taken on board. Nick won the toss and decided to bat first. Yogi and Dan opened the batting, both players had points to prove. Yogi set the tone of their partnership by taking the game to the opening bowlers. Although Dan started with his usual prods and pokes, he soon caught on and joined in. Their opening bowler from the far end went for 39 from his first 4 overs. Including big sixes from Yogi, and one very uncharacteristic six from Dan! Unfortunately Dan was caught out on the back foot after the solid start, leaving him on 46. Ben joined Yogi at the crease and was looking forward to carry on with the 7 an over run rate from the previous partnership. However the oppo tightened up the bowling, and the field well and restricted the two to singles. Ben played a patient 31, and Yogi ended on a spectacular, and patient 89. Tom and Nick added to the total with some clean strikes, including sending the opening bowler (4 overs for 39) to 5 over for 57.

The team strode into the bar confidently and looking forward to the great teas put out each week only to find the tables empty. Not only were the tables empty, but the kitchen was empty too. Nick finally bowed to his failure and shot to Tesco’s to pick up meal deals for both teams. Before he could think that his day could get any worse, it did. A meal deal consists of a sandwich, a packet of crisps, and a drink. Nick forgot the drink, meaning the deal wasn’t complete. To add to his misery, Dan decided a moan was necessary for the rest of the match as he wasn't a fan of Nick’s unconventional teas…..

Tim came off to a good start with a quick wicket, thanks to a sharp catch by Nick in the slips. Iestyn opened up from the other end and learnt that short on this pitch was too east for the batmen. Once his radar had lined up he bowled some good lines and caused the batsmen problems, and bagged himself a wicket. The opening pair had set us off to a good start, but that batsmen were beginning to setting. In times like these, spin twins v2 are the only option. Jake plugged away in his 8 overs, and was extremely unlucky to not get a wicket; but instead tied up one end for the batsmen .Andrew stole the glory with the 5 wickets, including 2 stumpings for Luke, and an extremely athletic catch from Will. Although the oppo were 7 down and behind the run rate they were not out of the game. Nick and Will replaced the spin twins and continued to cause problems for the batsmen. Nick was unlucky not to get a wicket, but bowled a massive no ball and bowled the batsman. Karma for forgetting the teas. Their number 9 began to find some rhythm, and they crept back into the game. Will bowled a crucial few overs and bowled their danger man, and the batsmen agreed with this, one was overheard saying ‘that bowler (Will) bowlers better lines that the other one (Nick)’. So much for genuine all rounder Nick! The oppo were bowled out for 209 and a solid start to the season. Well played boys.

Friendly v Statics 23/6

Scorecard

The Sunday XI claimed a comprehensive victory in their final warm-up match prior to their opening league fixture next weekend, mainly thanks to some relentless strokeplay from the ODs top order.

As the 2pm start approached, there were fears that the game itself wouldn't be able to go ahead, given the slightly alarming fact that only four opponents were present. Two of those four were provided by the home team at the last-minute anyway. As some middle practice was being suggested instead of the match, there came a call that they were only five minutes away. But thankfully, the game could commence.

ODs batted first in a shortened 35-over game, with Aaron and Dan opening up against the infamous PD, captaining the visiting Statics side. The first ball set the tone, with a full toss outside leg stump whacked to the boundary for four, finishing in the river. After many more boundaries and easy singles due to the scattered field setting, the partnership reached 99 in 10 overs. Aaron fell for 46, not quite finding the middle of the bat with another booming off-drive, sending the ball towards the fielder who took a good catch. A first wicket for Dan Brown – loaned for a few hours to the opposition – who managed to snare the first team skipper. Very impressive.

Dan was then joined by Ben, two unrelated Websters both intent on continually pummelling the ball to the boundary. A partnership of 138 was thus built, full of attacking strokeplay, even from the one usually renown for blocking it stoically in the most boring way possible. After skilfully dispatching some rather slow off-breaks to the legside boundary, the Home of Cricket saw a world first, as Dan not only hit a six, but did so to bring up a rather rapid century. The finest effort of the day was thus revealed: Dan started to remove his helmet before the team applauded, having counted his way accurately throughout the innings. A fine effort. And the knock itself wasn’t too bad either. Fears that he would end up an old dinosaur without a hundred were finally laid to rest.

Soon afterwards, Dan fell lbw, a decision not too well received by said batsman given the ball glanced his hip. Ben continued to compile the runs, until he suffered grave misfortune and was bowled by a ball that kept incredibly low, having to make do with an excellent score of 80. Some late hitting from Chris, Toby and Andy O’Rourke saw the team reach 296 in the allotted 35 overs. You’d say that was probably above par...

After tea, the home side returned to the field. Surely 296 was an insurmountable total. It was. Worsley led out his other squad in the form of the ODs Sunday XI. An early breakthrough for Liam Bulloch was countered by some powerful cover drives from the other opener, and despite the run rate being not nearly high enough, he soon had his 50, with 61 the team’s total. Some big shots resulted in wickets falling from time to time, with six in total being shared around: Chris Webster taking two, with one each for Jake Caddy, Aaron, Liam and captain Worsley. Particular praise must be given to Billy Rouse, who was greeted with the sight of the batsman advancing towards him even before he’d started his run up – the ensuing bouncer was short enough to clear the batsman’s head, and prevent any runs. Don’t mess with Billy.

The fielding effort was of particular note. Some dropped catches left Worsley howling like a monkey at his side, until he himself spilled one and then appeared a rather more reserved figure. Andy had a chance at long-on hit straight to him, yet the ball missed his hands, bounced off his body and crashed to the floor. It was very similar to the ball being hit at a statue, which was what Ben resembled when he spilled an overhead catch at cover. Worsley’s however was the most enjoyable effort: he sprawled backwards, limbs flailing about all over the place, before he got his hands to the ball and collapsed in an undignified heap. The laughter on the field suggested many were sympathetic about the tough chance he had made such an entertaining mess of.

ODs ended up winning by 120 runs, with a brief cameo from opposing captain “PD” bringing tears of joy to all present. A great victory which sets things up nicely for the league campaign.

Friendly @ HSBC 16/6

After a phenomenal team building session at Patricks ending in the early hours of Sunday morning. 11 intrepid cricketers set off for HSBC fresh and eager for a day of cricket. After a morning of rain delaying the start of play, the match was reduced to 35 overs.

The team took refuge in the changing room awaiting the return of the captain with the results of the coin toss. We had been put into field. The team hurriedly donned their battle robes and proudly strode out to the field of play. The bowling attack started with barrages from Tim and Iestyn resulting in two early wickets for no more than 10 runs, the gods of cricket looked kindly upon us as the weather turned for the better. However HSBC responded by putting in their big hitters who put on a few quick runs before being felled by well-placed balls from Woodsy and Billy. After dropping a catch, DJ Hider showed you can’t play the same tune twice by demonstrating his hands of steel and gymnastic prowess to take a fantastic catch two balls later. Achieving this despite looking terrified as the ball hurtled towards him. HSBC batted through 35 overs of relentless attack and never diminishing spirit to end on 222-9.

Despite the large total to chase down Jake and Taylor marched out to the wicket in the sticky heat of Sunday prevening. Three balls later Jake was out due to an unlucky ball which popped up unexpectedly to find the corner of the bat. Next into bat was Toby keen to put some runs on the scoreboard. Over the next few overs ODs lost two valiant batsmen to the opening bowlers. A few quick 4s from Toby on the leg side helped to put the bowlers under pressure, coupled with Iestyn’s intimidation tactics saw out the opening bowlers. Iestyn put on some quick runs before a straight one caught him off guard. Will then stepped up to the mark stabilising the match for several overs whilst punishing the bad deliveries. After Will was caught out by a crafty short ball it was Woodsy’s turn to take the stage. Early on in his innings showing world class composure as he fought to show the captain why he deserves the opening slot. After the drinks break HSBC made a bowling change to put Toby, who was on 49, under pressure. This was to no effect as he made it to his 50 and soon to be 57 before being caught attempting a cut shot. Tim took up arms with Woods to see out several overs before Woods fell on the battlefield on his unlucky number 16. Fighting to last man an injured Ben limped into bat hell bent on only dealing in 4s, despite some quick 4s and walked 1s he fell playing a pull shot.

The battle ended with OD’s all out coming short by around 70 runs but walking away with heads high. We are OD CUACO and we love cricket.

Friendly v Churchleigh

Picture
Lukeo’s bat needed some cooling off #worldclass
Scorecard

OD’s: 214-3 40 overs L Hunter 52*

Churchleigh: 108 all out 26 overs J Alvey 7-3-11-4

On an overcast Sunday morning 10 lads turned up at the home of cricket eagerly anticipating this match against Churchleigh. Oh hang there are meant to be 11 players in a cricket team, “where was the 11th?” I hear you ask. Unfortunately for Taylor he had managed to wake up at half past one still in Brighton, which just shows he loves Brighton more than he loves cricket – poor form.

Moving on from this disappointing action the Sunday XI skipper announced to the troops that this club needed to win more games and it was up to us today to start this trend.

After some hurried phone calls Tejus Patel was called up to the ranks and the team performed a stella warm up.

Nick managed to win the toss (first time this millennium that has happened) and we had the task of scoring as many runs in 40 overs as we could.

Eashan Patel and Jake Caddy started off our innings in good style scoring runs at ease and after 10 overs we were going at well over 5 runs per over.

Jake then apparently got a bit bored as he hit a full toss straight to mid-on to depart for 22.  Eashan followed shortly after for the same score, falling to the same bowler.

Ross Bondy joined Ben Webster at the crease the pair of them managed to keep the run rate going and at drinks were given the orders by Skipper Worsley to keep going for another 5 and then cut loose. Bondy decided to cut loose slightly earlier than the skipper had asked for and started to score runs all over the pitch. Just when it looked like they were in a position to really move on Ben lost his wicket for 43 in the 30th over to leave us 140-3 with 9 overs to go.

Luke Hunter was the next bat and he was in need of a decent innings after a poor start to the season so far. Having got his eye in, he unleashed a full range of outrageous cricketing shots to all parts of the ground.  Bondy kept him going with some entertaining conversations between overs and as the pair continued their onslaught like swashbuckling pirates the crowd came to life, with all types of shouts coming out especially from the skipper’s mouth.

In the 39th over Lukeo managed to scamper through a single which gave him his half-century in less than 8 overs at the crease – a remarkable achievement.

OD CUACO finished on 214-3 after 40 overs Lukeo unbeaten on 52 (Aaron are you reading?) and Bondy with an excellent 40 not out.

After a tea that was so good that this writer is not good enough to come up with a decent enough adjective to describe it we headed out to the field to have a pre-innings cuddle.  Confidence was high that we could defend this target and the captain ordered us to take no prisoners like a lizard does with its prey.

James ‘Jimmy A’ Alvey opened from the top end and bowled a devastating spell backed up well by Iestyn Caddy from the bottom end.  Between them they picked up 5 wickets all of which were clean bowled, leaving the oppo slightly shell shocked on 20-5 after 10 overs with no batsman scoring over 4.

The introduction of Billy Rouse and Tejus Patel continued this theme as they both took a wicket each early on, again clean bowled. Lukeo then decided that he had done enough work earlier on with the bat so decided to put one down at second slip, this resulted in an angry demand from the skipper to raise his game and not become slack, before a quick reminder that he still is a world class fielder.  Unfortunately this bat then went on to score a very good 52 and was backed up well with the number 10 who chipped in with 23 not out.

Marc Woods surprised most people by bowling some half-decent off spinners some of which Swanny would be proud of. When he decided to bowl his pace he picked up a wicket.

Billy returned to claim the last wicket in the 26th over to bowl out the oppo for 108, 106 runs short of OD CUACO’s score.

All in all this performance was of a very high standard and will surely leave captain Worsley with a headache when he tries to select his 11 for the first league game in a few weeks time.

Let’s hope this game does indeed start a run of victories across the whole club, we are OD CUACO and we love cricket!!!

Friendly v Statics

Scorecard

It was a beautiful Sunday day and the friendly team were ready and rearing to go, strengthened by the return of the skip. (well this was meant to strengthen the team) After losing his third toss in three days the troops were in the field, with Simon and Calum taking the new ball.

We got off to a perfect start with Simon striking in the first over bowling there skip for a duck. This may have lead to a bit of complacency within the ranks with Chris already promoting the idea of playing a 20 20 after we win. This was certainly not the case. Straight after this the oppo batsman decided to go for everything. Simon took another after a very good spell of bowling and together with Calum bowled good opening spells, but were unable to make another breakthrough. Rohan and Taylor were brought in to the attack and despite bowling good lines and lengths the oppo started to score quickly through hitting both boundaries and taking quick singles.

Chris Webster was brought in to the attack in an attempt to stem the flow of runs and he did not disappoint taking a wicket and together with Billy who picked up 2 wickets of his own were able to momentarily put the brakes on. However despite this the oppo continued to smash the ball to all parts of the ground and around the 30th over things took a turn for the worse...the skip decided to have a bowl. 4 overs and 49 runs later the damage was done, the heads in the field had dropped and if it wasn't for some world class death bowling from Calum and Billy the oppo would have got far more than the 237 they got. On a positive note, they were all out.

After yet another fantastic spread from Grace the batsman knew exactly what they had to do in order to get close or win.

Churcher and Chris strode out to the middle with focus and purpose and the troops looked determined. Five mins later Churcher was heading back to the changing room after playing a loose shot that I am sure he regrets playing. Billy got a quick 9 before being caught, meaning Bondy was in the middle with Chris. This is when Chris decided to take the game in to his own hands. With world class shots being played left right and centre, Chris was quickly taking over the scoring moving to 40 odd in no time at all. Bondy was dismissed for a useful 8 and he had done well to give the strike to Chris, This meant the skip was on his way out to the middle knowing it just needed someone to hang around with Chris for a good length of time to allow him to do his thing at the other end. One ball later the skip was dismissed deciding not to worry the scorers.

Eashan was next up to join Chris who quickly bought up a magnificent 50 and together these two looked like the miracle run chase was on. Spurred on by a partisan crowd Chirs decided to get the guns out and started smashing boundaries all over the place including two big sixes that confirmed he had been hitting the gym. Chris bought up a splendid 100 with a 6 over square leg and it was all looking good. Then Chris decided he had scored enough runs and came down the track and played the worst shot of the day getting bowled. (you need to take a long hard look at yourself) Eashan continued scoring but a run out of Taylor followed by Eashan smashing a full toss down deep squares throat signalled the end. The tail was cleaned up and we were dismissed for 199.

However we fell 39 runs short with 43 balls to go and only 2 batsman reached double figures! This highlights the need for everyone to value their wicket as well as the fact that 40 overs is a long time to bat.

Massive thanks to Grace for doing teas and Wendy for scoring.

Well played to Chris who bowled 6-1-19-1 and scored 106. We will bounce back next week. We are Od Cuaco and we love cricket
