Under 15s at Blackheath B
13th May 2012
Blackheath 45 All out (23.3 overs); OD’s 46 for 4 (14.3 overs). ODs won by 6 wickets
Callum Nicol 5 for 7; Billy Rouse 29 not out.
Facing a potentially difficult first match away at Blackheath, Billy Rouse won the toss and put Blackheath in. Sam Hutton and George Yonge achieving a good line and length from the outset. Sam got an early breakthrough and George followed quickly leaving the home team on 4 for 2. Billy Rouse, Ryan Raymond and Abhishek Patel continued to apply the pressure and eventually Abhishek was rewarded with a couple of wickets. With the home side struggling for runs Alistair Dixon struck before Callum Nicol came on and effectively decided the outcome of the game, skittling the stumps with his 1st, 2nd and 4th delivery. He followed this with a wicket in his next over and then finished the match in his 3rd over. In between he even managed to get a run out off the first ball of Cameron Mansfield, who then managed a wicket of his own. The strong bowling performance was matched by a good performance in the field with a couple of catches and some accurate throwing. The only downside was the number of extras – 21, of which 16 came from wides. That would make the difference in closer matches.
Despite their weak batting, Blackheath had some very useful bowlers and Abhishek and Sam Fishlock started well before Abhishek decided to go for a run which wasn’t there. Billy and Sam continued to play extremely sensibly, blocking the good balls and only going runs when they were available. With the outfield very slow, they started to open up adding 12 runs in overs 7 & 8. This got us well ahead of target and Billy then started to punish the weak balls, hitting the first 4s of the day. Sam didn’t quite see out the innings and we staged a mini-collapse before we got the target in the 15th over.
This was a sound and professional win and establishes a good platform for taking on stronger sides in the coming weeks.
