U11 season report 2014

At the beginning of May we were looking forward to a potentially very successful U-11 season. However it then became clear that 4 of our most experienced players had moved to other clubs, including 2 members of the U-11 Bromley district squad. Our fears were realised in the early season as we lost our first 3 matches (Bexley, Bickley and Beckenham). There were of course some good performance especially from Luxan Sureshan who took wickets and scored runs (21* and 13). In addition Jaimie Higgins bowled fast and hit the ball hard and Louis Conboy took wickets with his ‘magic arm’.

The turning point came against Blackheath U-11B. Bowling first we reduced the opposition to 39-7 with wickets from Alex Davison (2-4), William East (2-7), Louis Conboy (2-10) and Luxan Sureshan (1-1). Unfortunately an 8th wicket partnership of 39 took the score to 80 all out. This was certainly a challenging total. After 2 early wickets William East (13) and Noah de Vaux were batting well until William was given out LBW (by his father who still hasn’t been forgiven!). At 32-3 with our most experienced batsmen out we could have been in trouble. However Noah de Vaux (only Year 4 but already a Bromley district player) batted with great assurance making 22 not out ably supported by Alex le Conte (5 not out).

After that match there was no stopping the team. The most exciting match was against Orpington where tight bowling by William East and Noah de Vaux (both 3-0-8-1) restricted them to 83-4 off 20 overs. A quick fire 20 from Jamie Higgins with support from Henry Courtney, William East and Luxan Sureshan got us within touching distance but it was left to year 4 players Alex Davison (3*) and Jamie Cleaver (0*) to hang in and take the match by 2 wickets with 4 balls to spare.

After that the boys played with ever increasing confidence recording comfortable victories over Sidcup and Darfortdians. Against Sidcup we racked up a massive 112-4 in 20 overs thanks mainly to a 50 partnership from Luxan Sureshan (22*) and William East (19*). Tight bowling all-round and wickets from William East (2-7), Alex le Conte (1-9) and Luxan Sureshan (1-13) ensured that Sidcup didn’t get close. Dartfordians were restricted to 57-8 off 24 overs (yes 24 overs) through yet more tight bowling and wickets from Jamie Higgins (1-14), Noah de Vaux (2-2), Alex o’Loughnane (2-6) and Drew Gatward (1-6). It took us 13.1 overs to overtake the score, with runs from Jamie Higgins (9), William East (6*) and Louis Conboy (5).

Overall a very satisfactory season. It was noticeable that the boys' confidence and skills increased over the season and this is a tribute to them and the coaching staff at ODs. Our key players (William East, Luxan Sureshan, Jamie Higgins and Noah de Vaux) led the way with runs, wickets and fielding however almost everyone had a contribution to make whether it was a piece of fielding in a tight match or youngsters Drew Gatward and Johnny Barrett batting out overs to help us to a competitive total. Captaincy was shared between Henry Courtney and William East. Henry was always energetic and leading from the front whether through controlling the field or stealing runs at the crease. William was quietly authoritative and grew in confidence.

Jamie Higgins, Miles Llewelyn and Henry Courtney move on to the U12 and U13 squads next year but the majority of the boys will be with us next year - I hope for another exciting and entertaining season.

Blackheath at home 23rd June

Scorecard

A fine evening to play cricket. After a number of lost games where we seemed to be getting more competitive hopes were high. Captain William won the toss (for once) and decided to bowl. Luxan opened the bowling and took a wicket with his forth ball - a fantastic diving catch by Sam Cordingley. The opening spell by Luxan (2-1-1-1) and Noah was very tight and was backed up by some good fielding. Whilst Alex ‘C’ and Louis had a few problems with their line Louis did pick up a couple of wickets. The next pair of bowlers, William (2-0-7-2) and Alex ‘D’ (2-0-4-2) were in devastating form, reducing Blackheath to 39-7. This included a fine catch by wicketkeeper Jamie sprinting to catch a high ball - incidentally his keeping was excellent only conceding 1 bye. For a moment it looked like we would dismiss the opposition cheaply however some good batting, a few loose overs and loss of concentration in the field allowed them to reach 80, with Noah wrapping up the innings to finish with 2.3-0-4-1.

A target of 81 could well have been a challenge as often we have struggled to score runs. The opening pair, William and Luxan, survived the opening overs of tight and quick bowling with assurance however Luxan managed to run himself out with over-eagerness to get a 2nd run where there probably wasn’t one. Runs were coming quite freely with William pulling a ball skilfully for a boundary. But then with Jamie skying a catch and William (12) getting trapped LBW by a ball that jagged in sharply there was a concern that we might fall short again. However Noah and Alex ‘C’ (5*) survived some initial uncertainty and hesitant running to show real determination and skill to take us to the brink of victory. With 4 needed from 9 balls Noah (22*) avoided any last over anxiety by driving a beautiful 4. Well done boys - that win was well deserved. Let’s take that into the next match. Thanks to Jane East and Becca de Vaux for scoring.

U11s v Beckenham 19/7

Scorecard

The final u-11 match promised to be a fiercely contested affair with both sides containing players from Highfield Junior School (7 for OD, 2 for Beckenham) and team mates from Bromley district cricket.

OD batted first and openers Sam de Vaux and Joe East took contrasting approaches. Sam raced to 22 before being bowled by a very good ball by Beckenham's 1st change bowler. Joe was watchful and restrained (and was fortunate to be dropped early on). William Black joined Joe for a productive partnership and eventually retired on 26. Joe retired shortly after on 25 in the 15th over. Jonny Thompson (9) and Jack Holmes (1) took us to 120-1 at the close. A decent but gettable target.

Needing 6 an over Beckenham started steadily against accurate bowling from William Black and Jonny Thompson however they started to score more freely against the 1st change bowlers and were ahead of the rate after 8 overs. Accurate spells from the East brothers put the pressure on with William impressing with figures of 2-0-5-1 (a good catch by wickie Sam de Vaux standing up to the stumps).

At this point Beckenham needed 60 from the last 8 overs. The play became frantic and tense. Lusty hitting produced a stream of boundaries, wickets for Luxan Sureshan and Jonny Thompson, a run-out and 2 more that should have been run out. We arrived at the last over with Beckenham needing 13 to win. The first ball was struck for 4, the next 2 spun past the bat into the keepers gloves. The batsman connected with the 4th ball and some how pierced the field for 4. No score off the 5th ball meant that Beckenham needed 5 to win off the last ball, or 4 to tie the scores. The ball was struck past the bowler and the fielder at mid-on and headed for the boundary. However an alert Thomas Greene-Taylor had raced around and managed to kick the ball away from the line. When the ball eventually returned to the bowler only 2 runs had been scored and victory was secured. A great match between well matched teams played with intensity but good humour, a great way to finish the season.

U11s at Hayes 17/6

Scorecard

Hayes won the toss and decided to field (which was fine as we would have batted anyway). Despite an early wicket Sam de Vaux (27*) and William Black (10) took us to 45-1 by the 10th over which was steady progress against an accurate attack. A couple of quick wickets slowed scoring down however after playing themselves in Joe East (20*) and Yusuf Sait (9*) added 31 in the last 5 overs to set Hayes 92 to win. To defend this total we were going to have to bowl and field exceptionally well and take all opportunities presented. Unfortunately Hayes got off to a bit of a flier with a flurry of boundaries and quick singles. Wickets by Sam de Vaux (1-20) and Yusuf Sait (2-9) and a run out by Joe East reduced Hayes to 46-4 in the 7th over. It was becoming clear that we would need to bowl them out to win. However we were unable to take any further wickets and some of the focus was lost in the field. Sensible batting by numbers of 6 and 7 after Tom Mogford retired on 26 not out took Hayes to their target in the 14th over.

It's no disgrace to be beaten by a very competent side, just a few improvements will help the team compete with the best teams in this league. First we are getting good starts and are able to score quickly in the final overs however we need to be able to start accelerating our scoring rate during the middle overs. Second fielders need to concentrate on where they are positioned and not wander from their position; we conceded several boundaries from byes and wides that would not have occurred if fielders had been in the positions they had been allocated to. Putting these 2 things right will probably make a difference of 20 runs over the course of a game which can make all the difference.

U11 home to HSBC 13/6

Scorecard

ODs lost the toss and were put into bat on a windy, late afternoon. As it turned out the pitch had plenty of bounce which together with a fast outfield promised a high scoring match. Openers Will Black  (26*) and Jonny Thompson (28*) didn't disappoint with an unbroken stand. It started with Will punching the first ball for 4 through the covers and there were plenty more shots that got full value. However what was most pleasing was the running and calling. We discussed calling early, running hard and looking for extra runs at every point and Will and Jonny set the standard from the first over. Next in was Joe East who hit a quick fire 25* that included 4 successive fours in his 2nd over. Ben Jafapouran (4*) supported Joe well and then right at the end Sam de Vaux contributed another quick 13* to take us to 160-0 off 20 overs.

It seemed highly unlikely that HSBC would be able to match this total however we discussed keeping our focus when bowling and fielding during the break. The opening spells from William Black and Sam de Vaux were backed up by good fielding to restrict the run rate in the early overs and eventually Rikin Parikh (1-11) made the break-through. HSBCs 2 best batsmen then started to plunder some runs before Joe East (2-1) took 2 quick wickets. Wickets fell at regular intervals with HSBC eventually reaching 81-8 to record a victory by 79 runs. This was very much a team performance with all 10 bowlers each delivering a good 2 over spell - other wicket takers were  Ben Jafapouran (2-7), Jack Holmes (1-9) and Tom Orlandini (1-6). The fielding was exceptional throughout: Louis Boyden did not conceded a single bye and Sam de Vaux took 2 more high catches to take him to the top of the ODs fielding charts. However the moment of the day must be Jonny Thompson's diving stop at square leg to save a 4. Well done once again!

Thanks to Nick Thompson for scoring and Tom Nichols for umpiring.

U11s at Old Elthamians 5/6

Scorecard

On the best of day of summer so far we lost the toss and fielded first for a change. The early bowling was accurate and penetrating and we quickly reduced Old Elthamians to 15-5 and then 29-6. Sam de Vaux was the pick of the bowlers with 3-8 but was well supported by William Black (2-12) and Rikin Parikh (1-17). At this point it looked like the match would be over quickly however OE batted sensibly and with increasing confidence to reach 93-7; the only other wicket to fall was a run out after a smart piece of fielding by Jonny Thompson.

Instructions to the opening pair, Sam de Vaux and Joe East, were to provide a good foundation and not take any early risks. They may have taken this advice a little too seriously as we reached 12 overs with 47 on the board, mostly courtesy of extras. At this point we were running a risk of leaving too much for the subsequent batsmen in the final overs. However this was quickly rectified in the next 5 overs with a sharp acceleration. The stroke play and running between the wickets was impressive so that when Joe East perished on 25 they had put on 81 in 16.3 overs. Rikin Parikh came in to play an assured and calm innings in support of Sam de Vaux (25 no) to take us over the finishing line in the 19th over. Well done boys, victory at last.

U11 at Chislehurst & West Kent

Scorecard

ODs won the toss and for the 3rd time in a row we were batting first. It was a blow to lose two of our top 3 early and cheaply but William Black batted excellently with an innings marked by sensible batting and firm dispatching of the bad ball; he retired on 25. After that we struggled to keep up momentum and lost regular wickets. Rikin Parikh played sensibly for 11 until run out in a mix-up in the last over as we tried to accelerate scoring. Our final score of 73-7 would require a very fine bowling and fielding performance to defend.

Will Black and Jonny Thompson bowled a tight opening spell conceding just 7 runs in 4 overs and were then more than matched by Sam de Vaux and Rikin Parikh who took 3 cheap wickets between them. The pressure was on Chislehurst and the screw was turned by Yusuf Sait with another testing and accurate spell of 2 overs, 1 Maiden, 2 for 3. Unfortunately we couldn't quite maintain this performance and gradually Chislehurst crawled their way back in to the match through some good batting. Once again we entered the last over with the opposition needing only 3 runs. Sam de Vaux was entrusted with the last over and bowled 3 dot balls. An edge for 2 to 3rd man brought the scores level and the next ball they scrambled a single. Yet again we lost when getting so close. The boys have to be congratulated for a wonderful bowling and fielding performance - the catching was excellent by both sides, I don't recall a single dropped catch. In particular Sam de Vaux took 3 catches making them all look easy. Unfortunately our batting as a team was not quite up to par on this occasion. When we manage to get both batting and fielding at the level we are capable of in the same match we will definitely get our first win.

U11 v Sidcup U11

Scorecard

Sidcup won the toss and put ODs into bat. Partnerships of 34 and 50 involving Joe East, Louis Boyden, Jonny Thompson and Rikin Parikh got us off to a good start. Plenty of boundaries flowed and we ended on 114-4 which seemed to be a good score.

Sidcup got off to a fast start however early wickets, courtesy of William Black and Joe East, gave us hopes of a victory. However a 3rd wicket partnership of 68 at a good pace meant that Sidcup always looked ahead of the game. Once again we went into the last over with our opponents requiring a handful of runs; a single and then a bye off the 4th ball meant that we lost another close one.

A good performance and if we keep this up we should score our first victory soon.

U11 v Hartley Country Club U11

Scorecard

Our season started on a sunny but chilly evening. ODs lost the toss and were put into bat. Joe East (17) and William Black (20) put on an excellent 66 for the first wicket, a stand marked by good calling and running. Unfortunately there was a clatter of wickets and the innings lost momentum to finish on 82-7. A challenging but gettable score.

We fielded and bowled well taking wickets regularly, our main wicket takers being Will Black (2-11), Yusuf Sait (2-5) and Rikin Parikh (2-11). Unfortunately we also kept conceding no-balls and wides which meant that the last over began with Hartley 9 wickets down but needing only 2 runs. Their number 11 opened his arms and hit the 4th ball of the over for 4 and they took the match. An exciting if disappointing finish.

The opposition umpire and manager specifically mentioned Yusuf's impressive spin bowling (a lot of turn and good control) and Joe's wicketkeeping.

A word of thanks to all the parents for bringing the boys a long way and on time, with special thanks to Nick for scoring and Kan for umpiring.
