U13s at Old Elthamians 25th June
Scorecard
We were promised torrential rain but instead the sun just shone all evening. Batting first, we were 3 down quickly but then Sam de Vaux was joined by Jay Gatward. Sam was in a particularly aggressive mood and quickly reach 25 and retired. Then Finlay Irvine arrived at the crease and played a very classy innings that was particularly memorable for his off-driving. Jay also batted well in support until he was run out taking a risky single to the wicketkeepers fumble. This precipitated an extraordinary sequence in which OE’s Vikram, bowling leg spin, took 4 wickets in 4 balls and then a 5th 2 balls later. We had managed to lose 6 wickets in the space of about 14 balls. Sam returned to the crease and was well supported by Josh Wylie in putting on a few more runs before Sam was finally caught for 32. Our total was 98 which realistically wasn’t enough. Disappointingly we were bowled out in the 18th over leaving over 5 overs to spare. Although Vikram bowled well many of the shots played were not appropriate to the situation and we could easily have made 20 or 30 more runs through sensible batting.
Nevertheless the boys were confident and we talked about keeping things tight, keeping concentration and we would see what would happen. William Black and Joe East opened the bowling and quickly opened their accounts reducing OEs to 1-3. William Black’s bowling was tight and accurate and Joe was varying the pace of his spinners, securing a bowled with a very rapid delivery. The first 6 overs only conceded 16 runs which was a great start. Then Finlay Irvine and Sam de Vaux kept the pressure on in an 8 over spell that saw 2 wickets to Sam and a run out from a smart piece of work by keeper Henry Hamilton. The boys were starting to feel that they were in with a chance but an excellent innings of 25 (retired) from J Buckley took OEs closer to their target. At this point Johnny Thompson bowled an excellent spell (4-0-6-1) that swung the game firmly in our favour as the captain rotated his bowlers from the other end. After the dangerous Vikram was run out and Joe East secured a 2nd wicket, Buckley returned to the crease with just 16 needed off 15 balls. A firmly hit 4 and some slightly frazzled fielding meant we went into the last over with OEs needing 7 to win. The ball was handed to Jay Gatward. The first ball was full and accurate and was squirted away for a single. The 2nd ball was equally good but the batsmen could only chip it up in the air for Joe East to pounce on the catch. Naturally the boys were ecstatic. Well done to all - it’s great to win a game and still feel there are things we can improve on.
