Newsletter #7

A tough week, but we move onto a big set of games this weekend!

Catch of the Week

Take a bow Isaac

1st XI v Tunbridge Wells

A depleted 1st XI headed to Bulgaria to celebrate the marriage of Eashan Patel, while a depleted first XI also headed to Tunbridge Wells to play at the Nevil Ground, captained by D Webster.

The two contrasting venues had different fortunes for the two ODs sides. While Eashan enjoyed a happy marriage, ODs were sadly second best down in mid-Kent.

Losing the toss and bowling first was not a great start, and on the hot summers day, T Wells made ODs pay, with some clever batting and good running getting them to a total of 244-8 with Will East the pick of the bowlers taking a late 4fer.

With the bat, Gazball infected the 1s and things started slowly, and the chase always looked tough. Batsmen made starts, but scoreboard pressure meant ODs lost a reasonably steady stream of wickets as the rate rose, ending up 49 runs short.

Onto next week where there is a very confusing #WebsterOut and #WebsterIn campaign to deal with as the Bulgarian contingent return for a big clash at home to local Div 1 rivals Beckenham

2nd XI v Orpington

Ods hoped to get back on track against high flyers Orpington this week. With wedding gate and #gazout in full flow, Isaac took the captaincy. Old habits die hard and the boundary was pulled out far, though no extra rope was used this time! Having won the toss we did what every side in Kent would have done and batted first.

Richard strode to the crease without his bestie, who was replaced with bob bridges. A strong positive start was needed after the last few weeks but unfortunately this didn’t occur. As my dad walked back to the pavilion in the first over he was having flashbacks to ‘LEFTYYY WHY DID YOU LEAVE A STRAIGHT ONE’. The rest of the top order didn’t do much better. A combination of some good bowling from their opening pair and some not amazing batting saw us lose some earlier wickets. Tom Howe and Gary looked to steady the ship though both fell to some very sharp catches. The middle order couldn’t do much better and ods were reduced to 40-7. Panic was starting to set in. The lower order did exceptionally well to bring us to a score that wasn’t embarrassing. Rakesh cut the bowl expertly on his way to 41 and he was supported well by both Robin and Andy who showed some grit to stick around with him. The less said about the running between the wickets the better though!

We scrapped our way to 106 and it was the same story as the last few weeks, we needed to bowl them out. We got off to a great start with Andy hall grabbing a wicket in the first over, which was gobbled up by Gary at gully. Their number 3 came out swinging to try and get the game over and done with. He scored a few unconvincing boundaries though this brought them up to just under half the required total. At 41-1 it looked like the game was gone however some sharp bowling from both Robin and Liam gave us a few wickets which gave us some hope. Liam was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 wickets which included a sharp caught and bowled as well a diving catch from Isaac which he’s probably already shown you the frog box video of! Unfortunately we didn’t have enough runs on the board even for Ash to drag us to victory. The day was finished up with a tom lake drag down wicket - proper spin bowling.

A great effort to get the oppo 6 down in the end though 106 was never going to be enough. Gravesend (a) next week to hopefully get back in the win column. It can’t go on like this….

3rd XI v Hayes

4th XI v Dartfordians

I will try and keep this positive but it will be a tough job!!

I’m sure you’ve already read several times that it was hot, so in my wisdom and knowing that one of our players had to leave at 5 because he was going on a date! Meant that I upset most of the team by electing to bowl first.

With an opening bowling attack of Asa Smith (9-1-34-1) and Ollie Arratoon (8-1-17-3) runs were hard to come by and with some good fielding they kept the run rate in check with the first 10 overs being very tight.

The bowling changes bought Steve Sawko ( 8-1-28-1) and Ben Westmacott (3-1-14-0) attempt to contain the big hitting 3 & 4 from Sidcup.

With the pitch being dry Tom Fox was bought into the attack to replace Ben and try and replicate his match winning achievements from last week, which he did 9-1-26-4 in doing so bringing up his 100th wicket for the club.

To give Steve a break at his request Kiran Bridges (3-0-12-0) was bought on before I bought back ASA and at the end of Toms Brilliant spell Ollie Arratoon.

So having been set 135, we thought we stood a good chance of staying top of the league,

Unfortunately barring Andy Rouse (19) and Ewan Laycock (69) no when else got into double figures meaning we end up 21 short, Ewan batted really well and kept us in the fight but when he fell in the 36th over it was done and dusted.

With a break next week, hopefully we can reset and go again.
